Building in Public: Introducing AI Drop of the Week
Let's get good at AI together.
Explosion! So many new AI headlines, papers, tools, conferences, predictions, hot takes, controversies. A new set of everything every single day since at least the launch of ChatGPT. So many people trying to get a leg up on the pile. Well, I’ve burnt out on X, but it’s still exciting. And I’m still addicted to X. Thanks Elon.
Anyway, I’ve been thinking about business models that will scale as artificial super-intelligence approaches, with some stress. Will I have a job after the singularity? Will humanity become useless?
Then. I decided not to stress because I don’t really need to capture a market or opportunity. I will survive. Plus I’m old now. My gut tells me that the software product model we know today is on its way out, destined to be replaced by commodity personal agents that can conjure up software on the fly, as needed. So, huge swathes of tech companies, VC-based and otherwise, are going to get hosed. Along with their employees. Oh well.
What do we do? Human expression will remain the most interesting thing, at least to me. So, it’s time to get good at expressing ideas and making things by working with emerging AI tools. Leveraging AI techniques to move faster and automate away the BS boilerplate tasks we never wanted to do anyway.
This will be the way. It will only get easier for everyone. As the tools get better. Software will just become another form of personal expression, like writing, music, art. Which will also get easier. Which means they will be less economically viable, which means you should probably get used to doing them for yourself and your friends, for fun. Like children!
Dancing will still be hard.
To put my universal basic income where my mouth is and to get comfortable “expressing myself in software” I’m spinning up a new series of open source projects, art, and blog posts, called “AI Drop of the Week” (a creative name I know, AI didn’t help me with it). The idea will be to ideate an AI something that I’m interested in at the start of each week, use AI to help build or create it–fast– and launch it by the end of the week. If someone wants to pay for something, they’re welcome.
Because I’m super busy and not all that consistent, it probably won’t be weekly, and might not be open source, or even be AI, but at least this is my intention. Please enjoy! (Or don’t.)
